His Holiness the 14^th Dalai Lama made this statement, when his long term Tibetan literary translator Mr. Tenzin Rigsang, and Geshe Lungtok Gedun, presented their proposal to found Tibetan Translation & Research Institute so as to usher in a renaissance in modern Tibetan translation, at their private audience with His Holiness on March 27, 2015.

With full funds from the Dalai Lama Trust, Tibetan Translation & Research Institute trained ten aspirant Tibetan translators as one of its first projects before we launched our ongoing project of translating all works by His Holiness the Dalai Lama into the Tibetan language in late 2017.

In the past four years, we have translated 46 books of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and first seven books have been published by the Dalai Lama Trust, and the rest are in preparation for publication. And we are still continuing our efforts to translate all other works by His Holiness into the Tibetan, with supports from the Dalai Lama Trust.

Beside our main project, we are also committed to take on some of the challenges in translating modern scientific thought, culture and literary works into a more accessible Tibetan language. We voluntarily created what can be considered to be the first ever comprehensive children encyclopedia with 32 volumes in the Tibetan language.

During the pandemic, we translated and digitally published over a hundred children books for the benefit of the Tibetan students across the Tibetan diaspora.

In short, Tibetan Translation & Research Institute is a nonprofit organization based at Bylakuppe in South India. We are committed not only to bring His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s beloved works into our own language but also to introduce modern scientific thought, culture and literary achievement into a more accessible Tibetan language through translation.
